This feature, like many other "goodies" where cut with the cost cutting ax. Other examples include front vent windows, "real" chrome trim, white wall tires, two tone paint, "real" bumpers etc. You can argue that other factors were responsible for the elimination of these items but product cost was certainly a strong driver. These type of changes have lead to the modern "generic" car (try to identify modern cars brands from the rear when you are following them).
