The easiest way is to look at the back of the alternator at the diodes, the newer ( 72 and later ) have a rectangular or squared off area that the diodes are built into. The older ones are rounded, you can see 3 of the diodes pressed into one part of the alternator and it resembles a 3 leaf clover as you look directly at it. ( Not the best visualization but once you see them together its unmistakeable.) Another way is to notice that one brush lead is attached directly to the alternator frame and the other brush has the field wire. The newer ones have two field leads.

Btw, the 100 amp unit is not included in this discussion, though it is very similar to the newer style.
