Subject: "hemi" vs. "wedge" -- was Re: IML: Fun Ride '67 Imperial with a Hemi?
If you already know this, skip to the next message. The designations
"wedge" and "hemi" do not refer to the engine per se. Those words actually
describe the shape of the combustion chamber in the cylinder heads.
That said, there never was a 383, 400, 413 or 440 hemi because the hemi heads are only compatible with the 426 blocks that were cast specifically to receive those heads.
The 426 was originally a wedge, then a wedge or a max wedge, then for a
time could be had as either wedge, max wedge or hemi depending on which
block/head combination the customer ordered, then the max wedge disappeared
and from 1966 on it was a 426 hemi or a 440 wedge if you wanted a big V-8.
The hemi parts are also not interchangeable with the wedge/max wedge parts
for the reason stated above.
Chrysler trivia -- in some export markets, Chrysler sold a slant six engine
with hemispherical combustion chamber heads! Can't you just picture a '64
Valiant with a "Yeah, it's got a hemi" bumper sticker?
Happy motoring,
David

I think the 400, 413, 440 and 383 engines were referred to as "wedge" design, weren't they?

During that time, the available Hemi was a 426.
