Get a Bill of Sale "somehow" and then use a title company, U. S. title
Service, 566 St. Paul St, Rochester, NY 14605 585-342-5769 or
888-521-1891, use their forms, pay their fee, get a title in your name. Or
check with your DMV, find out what they can/will do if you have a "lost" title
and only a Bill of Sale. Since the car is no doubt not on any computer
records, you might be able to work something out. Or buy a title from a
source and change the VIN tag on yours to match the bought title's number.
Haven't done that myself, but might work.
Or just put plates on it from another car when you want to drive it to
shows or wherever, but make sure you have the car insured, and enjoy the car and
keep the "Bill of Sale" with you. Can always say you're on the way to the
DMV to register the car in case you are stopped.
Passing thoughts
Broadway Title still operates in a few states, alas no longer in CA for me,
and their system works well if your state still does business with them.
You fill out their forms, have them notarized, you pay $150, you get back a Bill
of Sale from a state that did not issue titles back then, take that to your DMV,
have the car verified(that numbers agree with the paperwork) and, register the
car, the title comes later in the mail. This procedure works well if the
car you have in your possession came from another state. When it was still
okay in CA, I used it several times for out of state cars instead of trying to
deal with ancient titles, though signed off, but on cars that had not been
registered in years and may have had several sales since the old title's
original signer. The Broadway title was was easier, in my opinion.
