Is this normal, or is there a solution out > there? In my opinion that is pretty normal for an older engine with a questionable maintenance history. Even many new cars with good maintenance will turn the oil black in short order. You constantly have products of combustion leaking by the rings and ending up in the oil which causes it to turn dark. If you do have sludge build up in the engine I would just leave it be until such time as you want to tear the engine apart and clean it out. The sludge is pretty happy sitting where it is and is unlikely to cause any real problems. Those "quick fix" products on the other hand are a wiped bearing waiting to happen. If you break the crud loose it has to go somewhere... It can stop up the strainer on the oil pickup starving the engine for oil or little bits can plug up critical passages that feed the bearings and hydraulic lifters.
