Here's what I've done in the past and it seems to me to be safe and effective. Take the car for a drive to warm it up to operating temperature. Take a small jerry can with you. On the way home, stop within 5 minutes drive of your home and buy at least two qts of diesel fuel. Before you drive home, pour 1 qt of diesel fuel into the engine, where you'd otherwise put fresh oil. Drive the car home but don't drive it hard. You don't have to baby it, just don't stress the poor thing because you will now have pretty thin oil. The diesel will thin the oil and add fresh detergents that will help to wash the engine out. When you get home, while the engine is still warm, drain the crank case. Before replacing the drain plug, pour another qt of diesel fuel into the engine oil filler to flush out more of the old, dirty oil. Replace the oil filter and drain plug and fill with fresh oil. Some folks like this approach and some don't. Use this procedure at your own risk. I've done it to my engines and they are still running strongly.
