The parts book calls both of them "mufflers", and they look like mufflers
to me. I looked under my '66 Coupe barn find, and there's a pair of
mufflers under there. In addition, the line drawing in the FSM clearly
shows mufflers. I think what the factory was trying to tell us is when the
exhaust is done correctly you don't need resonators. If it's too loud,
something is wrong -- usually leaks or rigid hangers transmitting vibration
to the frame/body. Then the space behind your fender panels resonates like
a kettle drum. I suppose in theory you could say the second muffler is
functioning as a resonator, but a muffler by any other name smells as sweet
when it's behind a 440.
Are you saying it's loud inside the car or outside? Have someone drive
your car at wide open throttle while you stand on the side of the road and
see if you perceive it as loud.

first one is a muffler, second a resonator, right?
ALso, if you're redoing your exhaust, you should print
this out and take to the exhaust place to avoid the
free-form art that they sometimes practice with
disasterous results:
