I might be wrong, but for some reason I am thinking that we are talking about a '59 Imperial here. Starters from that vintage (through 1961) never did sound like the traditional "Chrysler" starter. The later ones are gear-reduction units, hence the unusual sound. I just bought a new starter for my '68 and noticed a difference in the size and sound of it. I actually like it much better. '59 models take a different unit entirely. Is there a "mini-starter" also available to replace the '59 style?
