The Fluid Drive on Dodge, DeSoto and Chrysler had the fluid coupling/torque converter use oil separate from the engine. Same, too, with the M-6 semi-automatic transmission and its predecessors. Engine, fluid coupling/torque converter, and transmission were all separate and used different oils. The Hy-Drive of 1953-54 had the engine oil shared with the torque converter and transmission. The transmission was the basic 3-speed affair.and was not semi-automatic The oil capacity of the unit was 10 quarts. Hy-Drive was introduced in April, 1953 on the Plymouth and Plymouth-based models (Dodge Kingsway, DeSoto Diplomat and the Canadian Dodge Crusader, Regent and Mayfair). In mid-1954 Plymouth and the related models got Powerflite and that marked the end of Hy-Drive. It was never used on Dodge (Meadowbrook, Coronet, Royal), DeSoto and Chrysler models. I have never owned one of these, but I remember being told a long time ago that the first Firepower V8's which were hooked up to the Fluid Drive unit, co-mingled the oil requiring a total of about 25 quarts each time it was serviced. > > I'll probably get slammed for this, but I really was told that, honest.
