A single field alternator has only one wire going the alternator brushes and grounds one of the brushes through the alternator case. The two wire version which is newer uses the voltage regulator to ground one of the brushes. If you see an electronic voltage regulator instead of the black rectangle box, it will be a two wire alternator.
