I can think of a couple of possibilities, but they are just guesses.  Some 
of the cheaper oils *might* not flow as well at low temps (the 10) and 
therefore, depending on your problem might slow oil consumption. There also 
may be something to the additive package which might soften seals (like 
valve stem seals) if that's your problem.  Could just be luck or a 
coincidence.
