I suggest that you have a parts-supplier handy and pass the info across the counter when you pull into your next shop.  I had mine redone by a "regular" sole-proprietor trans place and so long as they had access to parts and my FSM, they were fine.  I did have to get another core because the input shaft was damaged or something and they needed that, but as long as I was supplying the parts and the resources needed, the labor was reasonable.

The club website REPAIR section carries a full list of people that may have parts - I think that I used Bernbaum's but it's been 9 years now, and I have a poor memory.  He's grouched at me so many times that they are starting to run together.

Lastly, you might want to ask around at the transmission shops themselves as to who in the area might know about these critters.  There are probably one or two guys that really do know them, and you'd do well to be referred over to them rather than going through what you experienced.

They came back with a quote of $3600.00 because they do need a couple of hard parts and say they have to cut the converter open to rebuild it and weld it back together. They say it will take 40 to 50 hours to rebuild this transmission correctly. I told them to put all the parts in boxes and I will pick the up the car and the parts on Monday. I find it amazing that if they had all the parts they could rebuild it and have it back to me in a day, but all of a sudden it will take 40 to 50 hours to do the work.
