I have the castelated nut on as a safety measure as advised by the site.

I think the missing link was that I wasn't bracing the drum.  When I first started the job, the drum didn't turn.  I was pounding away on the breaker bar on the bolt and the bolt would turn but the drum wouldn't.  Then at one point, it started moving so I thought I broke the axle or some such.  That sent me back to the site and the FSM (no help) and I couldn't tell from Phillipe's pictures that the drum was braced.  So, now I will try that.

I haven't tried the heat.  Any suggestions on heat source?  Will just a hand held/propane torch do the trick or do I need something more elaborate?

Replacing the axles sounds like a great idea.  I will have to start looking for them now because I am quite sure I will be successful in getting these dern drums off.
