IML: Honey, I shrank the dashpad

Hi, folks --

I removed the center plate in my '66 Crown Coupe, the one that holds the
front speaker and air vents, for cleaning.  I oiled and cleaned the pad
while the plate was out.  Upon reinstallation I discovered the pad now
stops short of the plate's lips.  This looks like one of those "never do
this" situations.  Am I out of luck?  I think I'll have to get some angle
iron and fabricate a protruding lip to hold down the unsightly dash pad
edges and prevent curling at the corners.
