some more '82 questions.

I agree, any noise from the starter/ring gear area needs a quick look to see
what is happening there. While I am used to having to shim 454 starters, I
have not had that problem on any mopars, although the earlier cars with
413/440s have shim plates. I think you can remove the dust cover and just
look to see what the situation is if you can get it up on jacks stands or
trustworthy ramps.

Some plastic cans are made to carry gas - I have two red plastic gas cans
that I use here on the ranch all the time, but those hold over 6 gallons -
not what you need. I think a small screw top metal can such as brake fluid
is sold in would be ideal for carrying a few ounces of gas with you. Glass
would be dangerous, of course. I would carry it in the trunk to avoid any
possibility of odor in the car.

The A904 transmission is a pretty durable item - if it ain't doing anything
bad, I'd leave it alone - you have enough to deal with on that car.

You mentioned exhaust problems: These cars are fussy about the exhaust
system - a few folks have come to grief due to taking some of the original
parts off to get a better flow or for entertaining sound. I don't recall
the details, but I do recall a number of reports about learning that all the
stuff the factory put on there really is required to keep the computer
happy. Of course in California, if we do anything at all to the factory
exhaust system, Arnold raps our knuckles hard, so I've never tried it.

Stalling on a right turn is the symptom of a fuel pickup tube not extending
to the bottom of the tank in the right location - this happens with the
original system if the sock falls off, but I suppose if the person who
changed your pump system didn't know about it, he could have messed up the
design also.

I just last week finished up with replacing my headliner, and all the other
cloth covered trim in the interior. My car has the sun roof option, so this
was a big job. I'm very pleased at the result, although it was a lot of
work. I just bought a roll of the right red headlining stuff at my
upholstery supply store, 4 cans of 3M Super-duper spray adhesive, and
started scraping off all the old foam backing from the support pieces. The
headliner is tricky to get out with out damaging the support board, but it
can be done if you recline the passenger seat, open the right side window
and door all the way, and take your time. If you have the sun roof, you'll
need to consult the manual very closely to see how to take that all apart to
replace the covering on the sliding panel without getting it messed up by
the greasy mechanism (please don't ask how I know that!).
