59 Running, new carb, wrong air cleaner

Bill,

I am delighted to hear you have your 59 back.  You have been through the wars somewhat and are to be to be congratulated for your perseverance.

I hope you can find an adaptor for the carb you now have on your car.  May I suggest, at some point, you either get old AFB professionally rebuilt or use it as a core on a correct replacement?  I am leery of the adaptor rings.  They will raise up the air cleaner and it just won't look right.

I went through a lot of pain with the carb on my 58.  As near as I could tell, using an adaptor with the so called modern replacement car would make the air cleaner too close to the hood for comfort.  As the air cleaner is an essential element of how the thing is supposed to look under the hood, I decided to keep on looking for a correct replacement.  It took a lot of time and energy but I now have two correct carbs for my car.  getting one for a 413 may be easier.

As it happens, my car is still in the shop.  The project seems to have fallen into the background as far as the company that is doing it is concerned.  I am, as gently as a pushy person like me can, trying to get them going again.  It's relatively delicate, since the work is being done for free, but I have been Imperial-less for too long and want to get it back, as you may well understand.  It's like playing poker and everyone can see your hand and knows you are holding . . .  nothing, nothing at all.  It remains vital to stay at the table and keep an eye on the big win at the end.

Subject: IML: My '59 is runnin fine!

I picked up my '59 Imperial from it's engine rebuild and new Edelbrock 600CFM carburetor. The car is running as smooth as glass, but when I got it home I noticed a very strange air cleaner on it, and my old Carter carb was not in the car. I went back to the mechanic to get my old carb and air cleaner, and after quite a bit of searching one of the mechanics finally came over holding my original air cleaner, and they packed my old Carter into the new Edelbrock box. It seems they had put on an air cleaner from an old Chevy truck they were working on also. There was one glitch however. My old air cleaner is now too narrow to fit over the Edelbrock carburetor. I'm going to look for one of those chrome plated Edelbrock after market air cleaners for it tomorrow, and I looked at one today, but it did not fit down over the carb, so it will need the adapter rings under it to raise it up. This is hopefully a temporary solution, since I don't want the engine looking like some kids attempt to make a hot rod. Does anyone know if there is an adapter ring which would make it possible to use my original air cleaner?
