Two-tone '65 coupe spotted in San Francisco

Hello, fellow Imperial lovers --

I went out to the Mission District Saturday night for Cuban food and
spotted a red '65 coupe with black painted top in the parking garage off
21st Street.  Newer carpet, black interior in good shape, though front
seats had been redone in velour kind of cloth.  Very cute aftermarket
8-track player centered under the console with a tape sticking out of it.
Exterior was rough with a couple of 5-inch diameter round cancer spots on
the trunk lid near the rear window.  The cancer was symmetrical, like there
was something round beneath them that had caused the rust.  Anybody know
what could cause that?
