64 Crown Coupe water pump bolt fiasco?

Some clarification is needed here please.

Did the bolt that broke belong to the pulley common to the fan and water
pump itself? If so, one need only remove the water pump as it is separate
from the pump housing and go from there. There is no way that a bolt that
holds the fan or fan pulley has anything to do with holding the water pump
itself to the pump housing.

Was the bolt common to the pump housing...if so, then yes the pump and
housing will have to come off. That is not typically a huge job on one of
these cars.To get the housing off, is not a big deal but getting the other
accessories out of the way is what one has to do.

Go ahead and remove the fan or fan clutch , the idler pulley and the various
belts. You can remove the radiator if you think access is an issue or to
prevent any inadvertent damage to the radiator. I would not remove the AC
condenser, simply shield it with a piece of plywood or similar for
protection.

You will have to remove the AC compressor bracketry from the water pump
housing ( please do NOT disconnect the AC hoses when doing this ) and then
one can just swing the compressor and brackets out of the way to gain access
to the remaining parts. The power steering pump is also mounted to the
water pump housing, but again its a simple and straightforward thing. Once
you get the AC compressor and power steering pumps out of the way, then the
pump housing is right there and easily removed.

I would make note of the various bolt lengths that are involved due to the
stack up of how the different items are sandwiched to the pump housing, some
of them are just slightly different enough in length to cause potential
confusion later on if one hasnt had these apart before.

As far as the remains of the bolt, if youre lucky it will have some amount
remaining outside the hole after you get everything removed, if thats the
case liberal use of penetrants and some heat may be of use. If not, its
drill and easy out time. I cannot caution anyone enough how important it is
to drill straight and true and to go slowly and deliberately. Last summer I
enlarged the head bolt holes in one of our lesser 4 cyl mopars from 10 to
11mm, drilled and tapped all 10 holes with nothing more than an electric
drill and the required tap and a lot of prayers muttered under my breath.
