That sounds as though the socket is facing backwards. I know
on the early 60's, there is some sort of mercury switch that breaks the current
when the lid is closed.

Some thing is weird with my 64 Crown Coupe
trunk light. The light goes on when the trunk is closed and off when the
trunk opened. The first time I put the bulb in, it blew a fuse. I
have left the bulb out until I get the problem sorted out.
