buying a car long distance

I think we've had this one from time to time. I don't know of any way to do 
it without a trusted 3rd party to hold either the check or the title in 
escrow pending verification that the other is received. This probably isn't 
feasible on a small transaction. Otherwise it involves a lot of trust.
