priming an oil pump...



Hi Jason,
Packing the oil pump with petroleum jelly works well for me but as you
mentioned, you'll have to open up the oil pump case to do so. If you decide
to prime the engine thru the distributor hole, you'll also have to remove
the oil pump drive gear. I run the engine up on TDC before I remove the
gear. I made a tool out of a stiff welding rod to reach underneath the gear
and lift it up and out of the block. When you spin the gear back down into
the engine, remember you have to take in account that it spirals down into
place. A large straight screwdriver works pretty good for doing this. I also
fill the oil filter with as much oil as I can. Good luck.
