Hangers

I have an exhaust hanger question for you all...

with the basic "L" shaped hangers, you have two rubber
pieces- a male and female. Basically one goes on one
side of the hanger (between the hanger and the car's
sheet metal) and the other goes on the other side of
the hanger. A bolt then gets driven through them all.

My question:

Does it matter if the female or male goes between the
hanger and the car's sheet metal?

My new exhaust kit includes instructions and hangers-
but doesn't get into how to hook up the rubber pieces:(
