It did not have a problem like this. The original starter failed to disengage the pinion gear when I released the key from "start" mode. I drove the car not knowing what that rattling noise was until I stopped it and restarted and figured out that I'd just fried the starter. The new starter works so much better/stronger that aside from this current problem, I'm very happy to have swapped it out. -K --- ROGER COOPER <RCOOPER9@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > How was the car starting prior to installation of the new starter? > RC > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Mark E Blitman" <markblitman@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> > To: <mailing-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Sent: Saturday, April 26, 2003 8:27 PM > Subject: Re: IML: Heat soak & my starter motor > > > > my '74 is like that..try jiggling the gear shift lever before you turn > > the key..sometimes this works..sometimes not...i have learned to live > > with it... > > > > kenyon wills wrote: > > > > >I replaced the starter in my 1973 with a chain parts-store "heavy > duty" > > >unit. -Lifetime warranty! > > > > > >When the car is stopped after a prolonged run on the open road of 20 > > >minutes or more, the car will refuse to start until the engine > > >compartment/block has cooled significantly, maybe 40 minute-worth. > This > > >does not happen in stop & go around town stuff, and the starter works > > >strongly and well otherwise. > > > > > >When the symptom occurs, the relay on the solenoid can be heard to > lightly > > >click, but no physical movement of any sort occurs in the starter. > No > > >audible click as heard when the battery is low, so I'm assuming that > the > > >entire thing's expanded so far that it is just seized up.
