Hoses used on R-12 systems are more porous that those designed for 134A, which has a smaller molecular size than R-12 and will "seep" through even when there is no obvious leaks. As cheap as 134A is, I agree, just add a can or two when needed if you don't have to go through an entire system change. And, yes, the Imp's larger condenser, evaporator and system capability helps a lot in the conversion since you only put in about 80% as much 134A when doing a conversion. In addition, the head pressure is greater in the compressor with 134A.
