Dick Benjamin is correct that the Imperials typically have a "Y" designation in the VIN. I believe that you may be looking for the body designation similar to the way Valiants and Darts are "A" Bodies, Belvederes and Coronets are "B" Bodies, etc.
The '80's Imperials are a high trim level version of the Cordoba and Miradas of the same year, having been built on the same platform. Mopar Performance catalogs classify the rear wheel drive Cordobas and Miradas of that vintage as "J" bodies, but Imperials are curiously not listed... hmmm...
Don't confuse the "J" designation with the '87-'95 front drive LeBarons.
To further muddy the waters, the "J" designation was used in the VIN (similar to the "Y" for Imperials) on '70-'74 Challengers...
