Of Imperial friends and future projects (68 Convertible)

When my non car friends ask me "Why Imperials?" I
tell them because of the fellowship and friendship of
the local Imperial community and support of the IML.

Robert Soule is one of these. Last week he came over
for a couple days to play and ride to Memphis with me
to take the 54 to the new owner. I thought we would
work on the 'new' 68 Convertible since Robert has
several 68's and I had no experience with this
particular model.

First order of business was the power windows. In
about 10 minutes Roberts showed me how the door panels
come off and we had the drivers side motor out (had to
cut two small access holes to get to 2 of the 3 bolts
with a cuttoff wheel) The motor was dead but we had a
couple spares. Robert showed me how to service the
motor by polishing the commutator and cleaning the
grooves between the plates with a knife. After lubing
the bearings and gears with white grease it spun
smooth and quiet. Putting it back took another 10
minutes and the drivers door was done. YEA!!!! It's
a pain not to have a working drivers window.

The back windows were a little harder because we had
to pull the back seat to get the panels off. The left
side was also shot but was replaced the same way as
the left front. The right rear worked but was SLOW
and sometimes needed help. We messed with the motor
for a while and were about to decide the motor was bad
when Robert noticed a screw that had obviously been
dragging on something. Resolving that fixed the
problem and all the windows now work.

Since the back seat and door panels were already off,
I decided to go ahead and strip the car since paint
and body work was next. Again with Robert's help and
knowledge of how things come apart, we had the car
pretty much 'de-chromed' in about 3 hours.

This will be a neat car. The Odometer shows 41K miles
and given the lack of wear on the brake and gas pedal
and the FACTORY exhaust system, I am pretty confident
that is an original mileage figure. It needs some
body work and a paint job and a fair amount of TLC.
The car is a pale yellow with black interior and top.

I'm not planning on doing a 'saga' this time unless
something unusual comes up that has not previously
been documented.
