Several of you had commented that the water filter was not an original part
of the 1959 Imperial, and I wonder if it wasn't, why would anyone install
such a thing, which I've never heard of on any car! The one on my car is
mounted on the front support bulkhead just to the left of the radiator when
facing the car. It certainly appears to be an original part, since it's aging
corresponds with the rest of the engine. The filter is appears exactly like
an oil filter hanging off the bottom, but says water filter on it. The device
has a two hoses, an intake and out take, and is hooked up.
As for my cooling problems, they have completely vanished since adding the
overflow canister, and replacing the lower radiator hose. The car now runs at
a cool 160 degrees on the freeway, climbing to 190 on surface streets in stop
and go traffic. With the addition of the canister, and Felipe's clear hose
tranny fluid return the streets under my Imperial are now high and dry, and I
don't have to add tranny fluid all the time since it goes up the hose then
back into the transmission. I'm sure my one neighbor is also happy, even
though my Imperial often occupies her favorite parking spot!
