1981-83 real axle ratio

Recently, Dick Benjamin stated that the ratio was 2.20:1. No wonder I can't
get the tires to chirp. Seriously, I think I'd be a lot happier with 2.7 or
2.9.
I've never done anything to a rear axle...how's this done? Is it better to
swap axles? What would work?
