lock up torqe converter for 57

Here's some info on this equipment

The Lock-Up Torque Convertor is specific for three types of engines, and
either High or Low Stall Speed. A parts list will specify a part number for
a specific year model. I think these appeared in the mid sixties, in senior
Chrysler models. I see a list of 4 types of tranmissions for which this
device was designed for both the A and B engines.

It is activated only after the last 2 to 3 gear change up-shift. The
Transmission Valve Body is unique to this operation. In the Valve body, the
Spool Valve is changed to a Switch Valve and provides the engage - disengage
oil pressure to operate the lock-up feature. A Lock-Up Valve and a Fail Safe
Valve are added to have it engage and disengage. The Transmission Input
Shaft has a special oil passage in it to allow this to work. It seems to me
that this device is both desirable and economical, but it must include the
tranmission and the torque convertor to function. One other item. As the
friction material on the torque convertor turbine wears, it can travel in to
the radiator tranmission oil cooler and block it, and this would prevent the
oil from returning to the trans. A flush operation is necessary here to
avoid this potential problem. Also, because the friction material is
integral with the convertor, it cannot be rebuilt because the heat of
rewelding the housings would destroy the bonding material.. On the other
hand, these are not troublesome devices.....Bob Harris
