I'm no expert, but what I've heard over the years is that rear-end whine is usually caused by pitting on the ring and pinion gears, often so tiny it's hard to see. If you're going to try again, I suggest new instead of used.

It certainly isn't meant to whine, Imperials were _silent_ from the factory.
