Re: IML: +++ CHRYSLER LIMOUSINES +++Trans-axles

Dear Enthusiasts,

Have read several messages here regarding service life....I recall Sherwood Kahlenberg writing of certain DeSotos that were sent on to Israel after serving in taxi work here--these machines went on and on in similar heavy use there under suboptimal conditions.  In truth, any mechanism can be ruined by callous inattention to care and feeding coupled with weather vagaries.

The facts seem to conclude that service life varies over a wide range depending on maintenance including filter changes, filter quality, oil quality, lubricants, plus general tune, quality of gasoline, driver skill, driver sensitivity and reaction and much more.

Rational buyers operating heavy trucks expect as much as 250,000 miles to the in-chassis overhaul, then an engine out of chassis overhaul and re-install at 500,000 miles, another in-chassis overhaul at 750,000 miles and so on.  However, any of these engines can be literally ruined by an uncaring driver.  Four-wheel cars are generally much lighter built and thus operators might expect less service even when done prudently.  In fact, though, when NASCAR was just a vision by Big Bill France he has been quoted as wondering if a civilian car could actually run a 500-mile race.  Johnny Mantz soon demonstrated that a stock 1950 Plymouth could surely do just that, winning at Darlington via steady running against the hotdog drivers in that race.  Imperials over the years did not shrink for extensive heavy use where called for--again Mr. Kahlenberg has written of that Imperial Six design of 1928-30 going on for several years in heavy-duty Dodge trucks frequently with WOT operation.  The In-Line L-Head Eights also saw heavy service successfully (as lawbreakers caught by the California Highway Patrol driving the Eights learned to their chagrin)--and the original HEMIs had a special following in severe truck operations.

Chrysler designers set new marks for front-wheel designs, as expert wheelman, engineer, and executive Burton Bouwkamp has written.  Many Omnis and subsequent vehicles including Imperials of the 1990s have yielded effective travel well into six figures including a 1993 Concorde that appeared at a local dealer shop for a "checkup" drive.  The owner wanted to confirm that all was okay for a major trip contemplated.  The long-service tech given the task began with a test drive that showed him power, response, handling--all up to standard.  Mileage on the car was just past 232,000 miles.

My personal Imperial experience over a quick 34 years includes several extensive family trips coast to coast with GVW as much as 6,300 pounds loaded.  Our then family of five found the added room of both the 62 and 66 Imperials plus plenty of power, excellent handling, and welcomed chats along the way made them beyond reproach as classy travel.  Bob McAtee has written in WPC NEWS of wonderful cross-country runs in 1941 and 1959 Imperials as has the late Tom McCahill writing for Mechanix Illustrated and a frequent visitor to Chrysler's famous Chelsea Proving Ground.

What a hobby!

I would suspect city driving, with many up-shifts, down shifts, OD on, OD off, more sharp turns etc. could lead to early failure. When I'm in heavy traffic or city conditions, I turn off the OD. We have many FWD cars in Fl. that have high mileage, but spend more time in high gear, going striate on very good roads. Just another thought, Dave.
