Thanks again for all the ideas, places to look, things to consider. Here's the plan - a good cleaning of the block, new oil pan gasket, new valve cover gaskets, a thorough check for leaks again, use 20W50, and I'll report back on how things came out.

Although I am not an engine expert, with worn valve seals you will have blue smoke at acceleration and engine braking (what happens if you suddenly release the accelerator at high speed?).I guess you car is equipped with a PCV system you might check it, maybe the valve is stuck. You can clean it with solvent then.Good luck, RobertP.S.: Don't forget: even when our Imperials where new, it was not unusual for them to use some oil :)
