I forgot who mentioned it, but someone suggested that I may have to get a replacement support plate assembly. At this point I believe they were right. Although I can knock the Return Spring Link back into position, it will not stay there while installing the Return Spring. I even tried wedging a thick screwdriver between the upper wheel cylinder and the top of the Return Spring Link, to keep the top from riding up as I installed the Return Spring. The Link still popped out at the bottom end.
My conclusion is: If a Return Spring Link comes out of position while installing the Return Spring to a brake shoe it is time to replace the support plate assembly. I tried about 10 times and never got the lower end of the Link to stay behind the pin that is supposed to limit its travel. The Link floats in its position but has to stay within certain bounds in order to successfully install the Return Spring.
I just received a reply from Bob Hoffmeister indicating that he has a replacement support plate assembly. I will be calling him later today to order one.
I will be unsubscribing from IML and resubscribing since I have changed Internet Service Provider. I now have a broadband wireless connection by microwave link. My old dial-up service will soon be terminated.
