In California, if the insurance company declares your vehicle a total loss,
you may retain the "salvage" for its value, which is deducted from the
settlement. However...the insurance company notifies the DMV and the DMV
then issues a salvage title to you and updates their records to reflect a
salvage title, which then shows up on Carfax, etc.. In other words, in this
state, whenever there is a total (or a theft recovery) the vehicle
automatically gets a salvage title whether you like it or not.
