Re: IML: 61 Brake Lights, I am stumped

Good for you in getting it done. Believe me, a socket does work. Some of those ridges line up and it fits like a glove. Now that you have it off try a few and you'll find the one that fits. I prefer the deep type so that it can accommodate the connectors for the leads.

A socket huh, this thing is very round with a few shallow grooves, I don't see how the points or flats of a socket will put pressure on it. I finally got the thing off with my rounded vice grips, it just took me a while to find them. I ordered the switch from a local vender for 16.22 so its not hard to find the hydraulic stop switch , I should be all set. I am glad it was't the turn signal switch, I think that may be hard to find and expensive. Thanks to all for your advice, this club is the best .

There is a standard size deep socket that fits it. I don't remember
which one. I don't think pliers will work.

I am close to fixing the problem. I really had two problems. The
brake switch leads had high resistance. The voltage was good enough to
light my test light but the amperage was too low to light the bulbs. I
cut off the oxidized wire ends and soldered new bullet terminals on the
clean wire. When I touched the leads together I had nice bright brake
lights which didn't work before when I shorted the leads. I thought I
would be all set after I hooked up the brake light switch but still no
lights. So now I know for sure I have a bad break light switch. I am
having a tough time removing it though. Is there a special tool for
these switches or do I just use some pliers ?

I have to agree with Ken I feel your problem is turn switch related.
