Make a copy of the cancelled check and send it snail mail 
and ask politely "what happened?"  I have had good 
communication this way with Gary Goers.

The wait may very well be worth it.  It is the lack of 
communication I would
be concerned with.  Perhaps I misread but it sounded like 
the customer's
attempts were being ignored.  For a thousand bucks I would 
not ignore my
customer (even if I were Gary Goers).  Maybe I was wrong on 
that.
