Re: IML: Re-installing brake drums on '62

The adjusters must be backed off completely. You can watch this action with the drums off to be sure the shoes are in the correct position. I highly recommend arcing the shoes. That will maximize the effectiveness of the braking surface. This is a step often missed and then the blaming poor performance on the design rather than the workmanship of the overhaul.

Subject: IML: Re-installing brake drums on '62

I received the brake shoe return springs yesterday from A&D Auto Parts in North Royalton, Ohio and started the process of re-installing the drums today. Even with the adjusters set for minimum expansion I am having a very difficult time of putting the drums back on. The drum on the right rear side is the one I started with and as the drum is put on I am having to use a sledge hammer to push it onto the axle shaft. The drum is shaving some of the brake lining off. Does this mean I need to remove the drums and shoes and take them all to the
place that re-lined the shoes and have them arc the shoes to the drums?

I don't think it should be this difficult! I must be doing something wrong, but I can't imagine what since I backed off the adjusters as by feel for the least
resistance felt.

Thanks in advance.

Joe
