This is a "REPAIR", and going to that section on the
site and then into the TRANSMISSION section has a
whole section on the "no reverse" condition that I
didn't even know about, since I haven't had that
problem, but others have (some of our regulars from
our list: Eric/Marty, are there on this one).

Take a look there too?  Based on what I saw, the shift
cable is the least-likely culprit in the chain of
events, so I'd hold on fiddling around with anything
but pulling it off of the exhaust and maybe stuffing
the excess cable through the firewall to take up the
slack...
