SV: IML: Dealer won't work on a '90s Imperial

Hullo Andrew!

I agree! You put your finger right on ”the problem”! But you forgot maybe one of the arguments from the manufacturers. They use to convince you buying a new product buy saying that “you also save power”.

That is a joke!

How much power do you save when you buy a new refrigerator? How many years can you use your old one for the sum of a new one before the costs of power the old one have reached the prize for the new one? And I think that is the same with cars. Ten years ago I bought as an everyday car am European Ford Scorpio with a 24valve engine. Yes, it is (was) an expensive car, specially when the time chain broke after only 80 000 kms when the car was eight years old. The Ford dealer told me before this happened and when I wanted them to give the car an extra service before a log trip, that the car had a time chain, not belt, and that the chain would keep for ever. I just had asked them to check the belt or, if it was so, the chain. Two months after the chain broke. That was really expensive to repair the engine, but the car was (and is) still almost as new and is really comfortable. The repair of the engine cost me 40 000 SEK, almost 6 000 USD. But a new engine would have cost 18 000 USD…

Today the dealers will not pay me a crown for that car. They will not have it; if I come to the bad decision to buy a new car they will till me to sell the car my self.

For my old cars, two Imperial Crowns 1965, one Plymouth PF 1934 and a Mercedes-Benz 220 SE 1959, I have “my own” mechanics. Han can repair any car of any age! He is working by himself, but he is a specialist on BMW.

…of course he also gives my Scorpio service. I mean, that the Ford dealer do not know their own products.

Best regards

All right, I've been trying to keep quiet when I saw this subject come up a few days ago, as it's one of my biggest pet peaves, but I keep seeing comments on it and I just can't hold it in any longer!..So excuse me while I rant a little to get it off my chest so that I can sleep better tonight! ;-)

It's called "planned obsolescence" and it's the Multi-national Manufacturing industry's best invention. It's purpose it to re-sell us the same product over and over again just as you have finished paying for it..They know exactly how many times a part can go through it's duty cycle and then break, they have it down to a absolute science. Gone are the days that things were built to last. Now they are built to last just beyond the warranty!..And the worst part is that they have convinced the public through relentless marketing ploys, that this is absolutely normal! They have convinced us that after a certain number of years, their product is no longer reliable and in fact could be dangerous!!.So you better go out and buy a new one! And we have accepted this!!!...Look at refrigerators: they are good for about 7-10 years..Well in my house I have 3 refrigerators and they are a 1948 Philco (painted black with flames for my "liquid refreshments"), 1954 Westinghouse and a 1949 Philco...All of them work perfectly and have NEVER been serviced!...So don't tell me they can't make a refrigerator that can last 50 years!.They used to do it over 50 years ago! It's that they don't WANT to!.it would be bad for business to only sell you one every 50 years!...Cars are the same, after 10 years they don't want to service them so that you don't feel that you will have any support if you break down anywhere, all of a sudden it doesn't feel reliable anymore, you feel unsafe, so you might as well buy a new one to feel reliable again. And if you ask the average Joe, they will just say that "that's just the way it is"..Well think about it: Aren't you angry that you spend $50,000 on a product and it is obsolete and unreliable after only 10 years, and the dealer doesn't even want to service it anymore??.I know it makes me mad and that's why I refuse to buy into their marketing and I don't buy anything "new"!!!...I broke down and bought a new home Stereo system 10 years ago that blew up on me 4 years later!...I refused to buy another new one. Instead I had my old faithfull Tecnics system from the 1970's repaired for $125 and have been listening to it everyday since then without a hitch. My Kitchen stove is a 1951 Moffat electric that not only works but the back panel looks like the dash of a 50's Imperial ( <---Imperial content here), which gives me pleasure everytime I look at it!...My fridges are old and my everyday summer car is a 1969 Olds, (winter time I drive a $1000 scrapper)...I have a 1923 Band saw and a 1930's drill press which all work flawlessly...So long live the old solid technology and I say to the New product manufacturers: "In your face!"

Whew!...now I feel better! ;-)

On the contrary, modern cars are the ones that are disposable.  You get it new and it's got lots of features, which is nice, but once things start to fall apart or you get in a little fender-bender, the cost of repairs is too high and there are so many specialized parts and computer modules that suppliers stop producing them sooner than they would have in the past b/c it's not cost effective, so you may not even be able to get the parts to fix it...

So it's just easier and cheaper to go out and buy a new car, which is just fine with the automakers and the dealerships.  And since they know this, well then, why should they bother building a product to last 10 or 20 years, when they know you'll trade it in in 3?

I'd say mid 90's was the point where cars stopped being serviceable enough that you could keep repairing them and putting them back on the road, to where they started becoming disposable.

Last winter our local Toyota dealer did an il change on my 86 Gran Fury. All they asked was that I bring in a filter. Also said they'd do most work on it if I brought in the parts.

Dave, don't feel alone. Years ago my Dad had his 77 Dodge Van TOWED to the local Dodge Dealer, and was told the same thing, since it was an ignition problem every component, if replaced was maybe $200. He had to then tow to a small independant shop. This was in Detroit no less. Dave.

Went to a five-star dealer in Richmond, Calif., over the weekend with an electrical problem and was firmly told they do not do any work on cars more than 15 years old.  The rest of the conversation is immaterial, the service writer was adamant and told me this after emerging from the servive manager's office.  Does this mean we're all officially "orphaned" by Chrysler China?

Happy motoring,
