This is a common problem for us, since we service both 60's cars, and many high performance boats. The big problem is non-use, or storage time.Since the re-formulation of the new fuels, storage, or shelf life has been drasticly reduced.(30-60 days) We use the following procedure: we use 89 fuel, we treat with a storage stabilizer, at the time of purchase as well as an octane booster (hi-performance engines). Our theory on 93 fuel is, that with so few people using it, the fuel has already degraded, and if we're lucky it's 87-89 anyway.Octane boosters work best with fresh 87-89 fuel, you can't bring old gas back by adding anything. The next thing is to store the car/boat, with the least amount of fuel possible. It is easier to get rid of a couple gallons of bad gas, then to run bad fuel, and risk engine damage. If you want to see just how good your engine could run, try 10 gallons of 100LL Av Gas, you'll love it. You will have to re-adjust the carb, and you can bump
the timing up, then hang on.We use Av Gas in our Drag cars, as well as some 85-100mph boats. The rules are kind of simple, and after many years of engines, this seems to be foolproof. We deal with $20-50K engines, we can't aford a mistake.Ya'll have a nice day, Dave.

We are in the throws of working on my ?62 Southhampton Crown. In the ?old? days when we had 50s-60s high compression engines (?56 Plymouth Fury) that were supposed to use on high octane fuel, we always used ?regular?. We did adjust the timing for that.
NOW, my query is; can we still use this method or must we buy ?premium?? I am not familiar with the changes in the composition of today?s fuels. Does anyone out there have the facts on this? We do not use ethanol and are not likely to do so in the future. Would like to hear from those in the know.
