Hi Robert -"Finished" is a little premature as there are numerous cosmetic issues that still have to be addressed. But you are dead on about the licsense plate story. She'll be using plates "liberated" from the soon to be sold Mark III (since they're custom plates they stay with the seller) as I'm not quite ready to re-instate the Oregon "Blue Plates" that have been on the car since it came to Oregon in 1966 from San Francisco, CA. But I can imagine that out of date Oregon plates will be alot easier to explain than California plates would be in The Netherlands. Very true about the gas can. Once, not long after I got this car, I ran out of gas on Sauvie's Island which is about 20 miles outside of Portland. A very good friend (although this episode sorely tested that friendship) had to come out twice (at a round trip distance of 44 miles) with a five gallon gas can to get me to a filling station. His last comment to me that morning was something about pushing the Imperial to some place where the moon doesn't shine if it ran out of gas again.
We laugh about it now, but the fins would have been very painfull. I was amazed that he came out the second time. Congrats Jim!, Must be a good feeling to almost have finished your beauty! It shouldn't take too long to refit the brake shoes and drums and then you are ready for the first "test" drive. That "test" drive story was used for almost a year by me to convince the local cops overhere that the car wasn't ready for Dutch license plates, allthough I must admit that they weren't very happy with the fact that I was driving the car around with Californian license plates in the Netherlands LOL. Please make sure that you don't go to far and run out of gas, with that little surrogate tank of yours :) These cars aren't fun to push to the nearest gas station! Have fun, Robert 1960 Imperial Crown Op Wo, 23 mei, 2007 8:17 am, schreef JIM LORENZEN:Hi Group - After dredging up rusty memory files of how I did brakes on my '60 thirty years ago; my first car, after an absence of 14 years, is about one and a half hours of work away from being ready to prowl (Stephen King, eat your heart out). Tomorrow at 10am I'm taking my roomate's '85 Toronado Caliente to my mechanic to see if they can find an oil leak and in the trunk are the brake drums from my '60 ready to be turned. I finished the right front brakes tonight about 10pm and got a good start on the left front. I would have had both sides done a lot earlier but the Toro had some Moon Roof issues (like not closing) that took a lot longer to correct than I thought. So tomorrow I'll have fresh drums to go with the shoes I had re-lined. All that remains is to install the shoes on the driver's side, torque the backing plate bolts and install the drums, wheels and the all important wheel covers. There will be a slight time-out to show my Lincoln Mark III to a prospective buyer, but as soon as I get rid of him or the Lincoln, I intend to take a little trip which will be as long as my lawn mower's gas can will take me. Thursday I plan to drop the gas tank and take it to a steam cleaner that's in my neighborhood. (an aside to Portland area Imperialists: After pricing gas tank steam cleaning at between $90 to $150 dollars I called this neighborhood guy who has done steam cleaning of engines and undercarriages for me before and he'll do it for $12 !!!) Once re-installed, I plan to fill up with Preimum and give the old girl a chance to stretch her legs.
