Hi Edwin and welcome.

I just went through this process on my 1969 LeBaron coupe. There are 5 nuts which hold each axle onto the axle housing. To remove the axles, remove the wheels and drums and then access the 5 nuts through the access hole in the flange to which the drum attaches. Remove the 5 nuts. The axles just pull out. The passenger side axle has an adjuster mechanism to allow setting of the axle end play. There is a small locking "washer" (for use of a better word) which locks this adjustment once the end play is set.   

Once the axles have been removed, to remove the center section disconnect the drive shaft and support using a jack stand. Then un-bolt the many nuts holding the center section in and remove using a floor jack. Be ready to collect the stinky rear end fluid!  I have one of the big floor jacks and fabricated a support from plywood which held the center very nicely. I was lucky enough to have another center section available to test the support out before trying to remove it from the car.  

 

Do you have a sure grip rear end (limited slip) which could be causing noise?

To find out, raise the rear end and turn one of the rear wheels. Does the other wheel turn the same way or the opposite way.

Thanks for adding me to the Chrysler Imperial Club mailing list. I have a question concerning my 1970 Chrysler Imperial Le Baron 2-door hdtp, 440 cu/in. The rear axle makes a strange sound, supposingly being worn drive shaft bearings. I would like to know how to remove the rear axle drive shafts for this specific vehicle? Do I need to open the differential to get access to retaining clamps or can I just pull out the rear drive shaft after removal of wheel,brake drum,brake's and 5x retaining bolts?? I hope someone can give me some info.
