Steve's idea of posting contact information of IML members who
volunteer to help/assist other members with car problems seems both do-able and
desirable.
The idea of trying to identify and maintain a list of "good" shops
throughout the country where help can be obtained at reasonable prices for out
old cars, although desirable, seems overwhelming in complexity and scope.
Keeping such a database current would be an enormous, time-consuming task. For
example, a shop that is ideal today may be a disaster next week because the
owner/manager died, moved away, retired, ...., and an idiot now operates the
business. Moreover, businesses, as well as people, come and go.
Someone has already suggested that AAA maintains a database of reputable
shops and should be able to help identify places; having the advice of a
sympathetic local would be a huge help as well.
