I installed the second axle last night. The end play is set at 0.010"

There was no adjuster lock (???) so I fabricated one.

  

I will fire up the engine today with the rear end still in the air and get everything turning and then re-check stuff.  

I used Timken bearings and seals and synthetic axle grease (Amsoil) and rear end fluid (Royal Purle 85/130) so hopefully this will last a very long time.

 

Note the Timken bearings are made in Mexico not USA!

The ONLY way to get the axle shaft end play adjustment set correctly is to follow the procedure outlined in the shop manual.  You'll need to have a dial indicator mounted to the brake support as shown in the '73 manual at http://www.imperialclub.com/Yr/1973/FSM/Chassis/html/03-034.htm
When you set the end play, wiggle the axle in and out of the housing a few times and check it again . . . and then do this again a couple more times just to be sure.

If the end play is not set correctly, you'll be doing the job again in short order.
