IML: Testing coil

Is there a SIMPLE way of checking whether a coil is bad with an ohm meter?
I'm really having a miss problem at mid-range STATIONARY. I don't feel the
miss under load when cruising. I have checked /replaced everything except
the coil. If I put my timing light on the high tension of the coil I can see
a flutter in the light as is misses mid range. Is this an indication that
it's the coil or is this a false reading and could be anything else? Can the
coil be shorting internally within it self? (I looked at it at night, no
sparking). I know coils are supposed to be bullet proof, but im at the end
of my rope. Would a diagnostic machine help identify the problem?
I'm tearing my hair out!
Thx,
