Yes Jim,
There is a mechanical voltage regulator in the temp
gauge. Sometimes it gets stuck, resulting in a high voltage (12v instead of 5.7
V) that will barbecue all your gauges :)
I have replaced my regulator for a solid state
(electronic) one, and the results are great. But that again will aks some
electronic skills from you.
I think you would be happy and safe when you buy
yourself an electronic replacement voltage regulator at NAPA.
Just tell them what you are looking for and they
will give you the right part.
I think you might even find it in their online
catalog.
