The bad coil happens from either old age like the rest of us, or from
too much current by bypassing the ballast resistor for an extended
period, such as driving a "hot wired" car. Since our cars are old, and
have been through a lot of strange encounters, its hard to say exactly
what happened.
A new coil, and a quick check of the wiring to be sure everything is
hooked up correctly should cure the problem. I won't add more since the
rest of this has already been discussed (extensively).

Well I certainly hope that fixes it for you. Strange that the coil
would be fried, a bad condenser should not damage the coil. A good coil
will act like it's bad if the condenser is not working but will work
fine again once the condenser is replaced.
Have a good evening
