IML: steering column shifter 67 Imperial

Hi all,
Ever since I bought this car the spring loaded shifter mechanism feels 
overly light in it's resistance.  The lever's spring is working but when 
shifting to drive or where ever it feels TOO easy, like there's another 
spring that's supposed to apply resistance.
Anyone know what I'm talking about?
