Modern brake systems have one front brake and the opposite side rear brake on each separate line so you should not lose the front entirely.

I wouldn't count on that. If it had been the 
opposite, I wouldn't have mentioned it. You're 
right, the fronts do most of the work, so if 
the brakes "feel fine" and the fronts aren't 
working you'll be in a mess darn fast. The 
simple solution is to check the fluid levels 
often. Pulling an old car out of the garage 
without checking is asking for trouble.

Actually, its just the opposite. The front brakes,
particularly in a car with front disc brakes, do
80-90% of the stopping. I have driven cars with both
no front brakes and no rear brakes, and driving with
no rears is almost imperceptible, while driving with
no fronts is pretty hair raising!
