Re: IML: my 47 will i ever get her running

Mark , I would assume this is a flat-head inline 8. If it is, then you may try this: head removed roll engine till the struck valves would be closed. Some valves had a common screwdriver slot in the valve head, with lots of rust-buster type oil on the stem, and head seat, try rotating the valve with a driver bit in a variable speed drill. The other thing is, use the ruster-buster, and turn the engine over, while applying pressure with your thumb on the valve head.Do this till the valve moves freely.I've done this on several old Hercules, and Continental marine engines. Starting the engine on a 2cycle mix, also helps with extra lubrication on start-up, we also use the 2cycle mix, during LAY-UP.Hope this helps, Dave.

I hope you drained the old gas out and are using new. I ran a car on a mixture of old and new gas no knowing old gas will make it like glue and it stuck my valves open. It this is the case you'll be pulling those heads again.

Subject: IML: my 47 will i ever get her running

This car use to run great  but after sitting for 8 years I am having a ton of problems. My main concern right now is its running really rough. I opened those viewing windows and saw that I have two valves stuck open. This is what I don't get. I can see them being stuck closed but opened ? aren't they under spring pressure to close ? what would cause them to stay open. I all ready pulled the head cleaned the seats rotated the cam by hand till the valves were all working. Put it all back together and it ran great for 10 minutes . then really rough again. It sounds like the valves are open again. Any quick fixes like thin or thick oil any tricks anyone has . I need to drive this car cause I am still trying to loosen the rear hubs
